::showering laura and august::

This past weekend, I had the honor of hosting my best friend, Laura's, baby shower. Little August is due May 17th, and I can hardly wait to meet him! I had the best time planning the shower and making the decor. I, however, did not make all that delicious food, several of our friends from church were responsible for that, and Laura's talented sister made the awesome cookie dough cupcakes.

Guests all made custom onesies for August, using iron ons. I highly suggest this Pinterest inspired idea for baby showers. Laura was thrilled to have so many cute basics in a variety of sizes to fill August's closet with.

Congratulations on your little one, Laura and Caleb. Being a parent is the best thing in the world. I couldn't be happier for the two of you. August is one lucky little dude.

fall retreat.

Last weekend we went with our church to Camp Paron for our annual fall retreat. It's crazy what a difference a year makes.  Last year Audrey was the only baby at the retreat, and she was just learning to roll over.  This year there were 3 babies on the retreat, and they were busy entertaining us all weekend. I loved seeing how much each person in our group loves our kids, taking turns passing them around, and helping give us parents a break to enjoy the retreat.

We talked all weekend about intentional community versus existing community, using the community of believers in the New Testament as our guide. I left feeling convicted that I've been merely an existing member of our community, seeking what our community can give me. I came home encouraged to be intentional with my relationships, both at church and in my every day life. To seek out ways I can give (time, resources, encouragement, etc.) to others, and not just live life going through the motions. The starting point has to be me being intentional with my relationship with the Lord, if that is right, then giving others 100% will come naturally. I've got several relationships that I'm working on being more intentional with, and I look forward to sharing the fruit with you in the future.

This Thanksgiving weekend, as I reflected on last weekend, I am so thankful for the community we are blessed to be a part of.  Thankful that they are here to live life with us, good and bad times. Thankful that they sharpen me and encourage me to reach my full potential as a follower of Christ. Sure, we have our flaws, but I think this is the closest I've come to being a part of a community like the one Paul talks about in the book of Acts.

::celebration::

A couple of weeks ago we got to celebrate with our church friends, Grant and Kim Harrison, as they shared the news of receiving their adoption referral. It's a boy, and he will be coming to them from South Korea in about a year! Our friends Nathan and Natalie threw a party celebrating their news.  It was such a neat time to be able to share in their joy as the Lord answered their prayers for a child. They are such an amazing couple, who has trusted the Lord every step of this journey, and we felt blessed to be a part of it. If you would like to hear more about their story and follow their journey over the next year, you can check out Kim's blog here. We can't wait to meet Baby H and watch him grow in our community!

Project: Reduce the noise.

I've had some calls and texts from concerned friends and family members lately, inquiring about where I've been on social media, so I thought I'd share some changes I've been making over the past month.  If you are my Facebook friend, or a follower of my Twitter and/or Instagram posts you may have noticed my updates have been absent from your feeds.  I have not blocked you from viewing my thoughts and photos. I have deleted all of my social media accounts, aside from this blog.

Becoming a mother has changed and challenged me in so many ways.  One major revelation I've had as a result of motherhood, is seeing for the first time just how self centered I've become.  My life is no longer all about me (although, it never should have been in the first place).  Social media had become a way for me to brag to others about my life.  As embarassing as this is to admit, I found myself doing things just to have something to show or tell my followers on social media, so in turn I could have the affirmation from them that my life was interesting.  I found myself wasting countless hours comparing myself to others as I looked through photos and status updates each day.

When Elliott came along, the Lord used him to convict me of the jealousy and greed that had taken root in my heart as a result of the time I was spending on social media.  I began to feel guilty for using the time I could be spending with my son (who is growing faster every minute), to see what others (some that I don't even know)  are doing.

Our church recently went through a sermon series on the minor prophets of the Bible. Every Sunday as I listened to Nathan share about people who were ignoring God and living for their own selfish desires, I kept hearing a nagging voice in my head telling me I was just like them.  I left church for weeks with the conviction to quit living my life to please others and start living to please God.  However, I did just like the people in each of the minor prophets, and ignored God's plea to turn back to Him.  It wasn't until after the final week of the series when Dr. Scott Duvall came to speak at our church about being bound by fear.  He explained that fear is one of the ways Satan binds us and keeps us from doing God's will for our lives.  He went on to explain that there are many different types of fear, one of which is fear of what other people think of us.  I didn't fully grasp why I had been feeling convicted of wasting time on social media until I heard that.  I was living my life in bondage to the fear of not being able to live up to other people's standards, and as a result I was missing out on God's will for my life, being a supportive wife and a devoted mother.  I'm just glad I realized this before Elliott is grown and gone.

So, that night I went home and deleted all of my social media accounts. It's been difficult.  I feel disconnected in many ways, but mostly it's been so satisfying.  I am no longer wasting time and energy stressing over impressing others on social media.  I am no longer wasting time and energy wishing my life looked more like someone else's.  I am enjoying more time soaking up God's greatest gifts to me, my husband and my son.  I still have work to do.  This is only a starting point.  Satan is working to find other means of distracting me, but I'm aware of that now, and fighting to stay focused on what is important in life.

You may not see my comments appearing on your blogs as often these days, please know it's not because I'm not interested in your lives, but rather because I don't want to give Satan a foothold.  I'm keeping this blog to share updates about our family with family and friends who live out of town, and trying to resist the urge to use it to seek affirmation from others.  I do not judge others who use social media, there are plenty of you who are able to mange your time and fight the temptations social media provides.  Social media can be a very valuable source of advertising and communicating with others.  However, it's just not for me right now.  I would appreciate your prayers as I try to steer clear of this temptation in my life, and manage my new free time wisely.

Dedication Sunday.

Last night was Elliott's dedication at church.  Dedicating him is a way of showing outwardly our commitment to raise him in church, teach him about Jesus, and guide him spiritually as he grows.  We acknowledge that Elliott is a child of God, entrusted to us during our time on Earth.  We desire to be faithful to fulfill our calling as Christian parents.  Our church and family also committed to pray for us as we parent Elliott, and pray that Elliott would one day come to know Jesus as his Savior and Lord.

It was a very special day for our family.  We had 20 family members and friends who came to see Elliott dedicated.  We feel so thankful that he has so many who love and care for him, and who will be praying for his salvation as he grows.

After the service we celebrated with coffee and dessert at our house, including a time of prayer for Elliott.  It was truly a joyous occasion.

Epoch Church Shower for Elliott.

This weekend we had our first baby showers for Elliott, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. The one on Saturday was thrown by some of my friends from church at Laura and Caleb Gunnels' house.  (I'll share about the one on Sunday in a separate post.)  These girls are so crafty, all the little details they thought of made this shower so much fun!

The awesome cake!

Tate came in town from TX for the shower!

Love the mustache straws!

We got so many cute things from all our friends at the shower.  I'll have to make a separate post to show off all the loot Elliott got.  We feel so blessed to have such a wonderful community in Epoch Church!

Baby Shower for Nathan, Natalie and Baby Girl James.

The hostesses with Natalie.
Saturday evening our church had a baby shower for one of our pastors and his wife who are having a baby girl next month.  (The baby doesn't have a name yet, so we all refer to her as "baby girl" for now.) This is the first baby in our church, so everyone is really excited.  We grilled burgers and hot dogs and watched them open lots of cute little girl gear.

I got to help host the shower along with several other women from our church at Grant and Kim Harrison's home.  Several of the girls helping are really creative, so the shower was super cute.  I thought I would post a few pictures for anyone who might be looking for baby shower ideas. Enjoy!
